Generally speaking, there are 2 reasons that people prefer buying a pet clipper and grooming their pets by themselves. Firstly, they want to take care of their pets on their own. Some professional groomers don’t look that “professional” and always get your pets hurt a little bit here and there when grooming, especially after they have already groomed over 20 dogs or cats. Secondly, buying a dog clipper can save your money eventually. You will get back your investment after 2-3 sessions of clips. There are many kinds of great animal clippers in the market, Oster Golden A5 Single Speed Clipper is just one of them.
Oster Golden A5 Single Speed Clipper Features
Oster golden A5 clippers are versatile 1-speed clippers
Compared with 2-speed clippers, they may lack the option to choose speed. But you need to understand more functions mean more money to be invested. 1-speed is enough for most of general grooming use.
Oster golden A5 has a powerful universal rotary motor
The motor turns 2100 strokes per minute. Some people complain too heavy for the clipper. The motor might be one of the reasons. Compared with other clippers in the same price range, Oster A5 has a bigger motor. That makes it a little heavier but it is also more powerful.
The blade of Oster A5 is anti-bacteria
Cryogen-X AgION blade of Oster A5 clipper features antimicrobial coating to reduce mold, mildew, and bacteria. This function protects your pets greatly and it is always neglected when we look for animal clippers.
Oster A5 owns a detachable blade
Detachable blade function means you can quickly and easily change your blade. And it is compatible with Elite Cryogen-X blades and the wider Take-Down-Quick wide blade series. So it is flexible for you to choose an additional blade if needed.
Oster Golden A5 Single Speed Clippers Reviews
The Heat Concern
Any clippers will generate heat no matter how much it costs. The blade of Oster A5 would get warm to the touch, but only got hot enough to bother your pet if you kept one running more than ten minutes non-stop, which isn’t usually necessary. If you do need to run one blade longer than that, you might consider getting a second blade so that you can switch while one cools. Remember to lube the blade before each starting.
Does It Quiet?
Like heat, any clippers have a buzz sound when working for sure. The golden A5 clipper is relatively quiet. Some users experienced unusual noise because he didn’t put the blade on correctly. Compare to other expensive powerful clippers, this clipper has 2100 strokes per minute and it also makes less noise.
How about the Quality?
Oster golden A5 clippers are 100% reliable. Oster is a well-know brand in clipper industry. Some users groom their pets once each month and the clipper keep working for over 14 years.
Any suggestions when using it?
You can get the following suggestions from an experienced user.
- If the blade of Oster A5 is getting hot, not the handle, make sure the blade is reassembled properly and very lightly oiled where the moving parts slide against each other. These parts vibrate back and forth against each other at high speed, so there’s lots of friction to generate heat if they aren’t lubed.
- Do not over lube the blades. Because the excess oil will cause them to catch in your pet’s hair. One small drop of oil is put on the flat surface where the two blade pieces slide back and forth, and wiped that around with your finger, trying to keep it out of the teeth. Then put another drop between the spring and the moving part of the blade. It is on that little plastic piece that’s supposed to reduce friction.
- Do not forget to use an occasional shot of Kool Lube while grooming to cool the blade.
- When you switch blades, make sure the drive lever on the unit properly engages the blade. It is possible to snap on the blade without properly engaging the lever, which causes unusual noise, and would probably generate heat if you didn’t reinstall it correctly.
- The blades will get dull eventually. The blades require special equipment to sharpen properly, so don’t try it yourself. You can find sharpeners online and mail your blades to them.
What are the customers saying?
The noise is not loud, and the dog did not seem to mind the clippers at all.
The Oster A5 is professional grade. We are dog breeders with five adult dogs, and when we have a litter of puppies there are days where I might clip ten or more dogs in an afternoon.
It will clip off even severe Persian cat matting.
I went with the single speed model and I don’t regret it at all. I don’t think two speeds are necessary for my dog since I just give him an all-over buzz.
Any complains on Oster A5?
Some users said the Oster A5 could not cut at all. They must be using a bad technique when cutting heavy mats. There are 2 solutions to handle the mats. One is to try and break up the mats with a special mat-breaker comb or tool before cutting begins. Another one is to start under the mat, close to your pet’s skin, angle the blade up slightly, then use smooth, careful strokes until the mat comes off. Don’t try to cut straight through the mats. Patience is a key to succeed.
The other users complained that the Oster A5 worked great for the first time, but then stopped working well after a few uses. This is a typical complaint from users who do not read the owner’s manual. The manual makes it quite clear that this will happen if you do not properly clean and lubricate the blades after each use. Also, it’s helpful to buy a can of Kool Lube and spray some of that on to the blade once or twice during the grooming of each pet. It’s also recommended that you not trim dogs with dirty hair or wet hair, as this will dull your blades. The correct solution is to give the dog a bath first, get the dog completely dry and clean and lubricate the clipper blades before you begin clipping the dog. If you take shortcuts, your blades will get dull much sooner.
What does it include?
It includes the following.
- An Oster golden A5 single speed clipper
- A standard Oster #10 blade
- Blade guard
- Blade oil
- Cleaning brush and an extra brush
- Spring set

If you have chance to take care of dogs or cats, you may be involved in pet grooming regularly. You will have to either send your pets to a professional groomer or you do it by yourself. The usual tool to be used is called dog clippers or pet clippers. In the marketplace, there are all kinds of dog clippers so choosing one of them is a headache if you have never got any experience on it. I was ever one of them but I eventually chose Andis 22360 AGC Super 2-Speed Professional Animal Clipper as my last choice after comparing so many products.
Safety is the most important
When choosing a dog clipper, I believe the most concern of the clipper for everyone is the safety. Nobody wants his pets to be hurt grooming by himself rather than by a professional groomer. Andis 22360 AGC super 2 speed clipper is solidly built with shatter-proof housing which makes you feel comfortable when holding it in your hand. The locking blade hinge was designed to keep blade secure and the break-resistant housing withstands abuse or harsh chemicals. It was also manufactured for years of reliable use.
Light weight and powerful
The Andis 22360 AGC animal clipper weighs only 15.7 ounces which is no more than 1 pound. Nearly no user feels the weight when using it. With the sealed heavy duty motor, it runs at up to 4,400 strokes per minute. The clipper is equipped with a 4×4 blade drive which provides 25% more blade torque than 3×3 blade drive compared to other clippers. Andis 22360 clipper was designed for super fast cutting. The two speed 3400 spm and 4400 spm choices make users do the speed change quickly and easily.
Cool and Quiet
Andis 22360 animal clipper runs so quietly that no sensitive pets were bothered on this. Speaking of cool or hot stuff, nearly all the dog clippers have the same hot problem after running for a long time with high speed. Based on Andis reviews of the product, Andis 22360 clipper is relatively cool even after using continuously for half an hour. Even if it is too hot, you still can make it cool down by using Andis Cool Care Plus Spray.
If you buy Andis 22360, it comes with a single #10 blade originally. However, it supports all the Ultra Edge and Ceramic Edge blades which make you have a large selection in the industry without only limiting Andis products. Moreover the detachable blade and removable drive cap are easy to change and clean. Some users have more than one pet, it is convenient for them to change the blade quickly based on different type of animal coats.

Pros: fast, much cooler than A5, quiet.
Cons: none so far.
I’ve had an Oster A5 since the early 1990s. At the time, I had only limited need for a clipper as my dogs were not the sort that needed regular clipping. I now own two very large Standard Poodles and found clipping them an enormous chore with the A5. The clipper would get hot, which understandably upset the dogs, and the noise bothered my female around her ears (almost nothing bothers my male, but even he didn’t like the heat). As other problems got worse, I knew I needed a replacement. I looked at lots of other clippers from Oster and Andis. I settled on this one based on reviews, but was still unsure–until I used it. The closest comparison would be if you had been fastening screws using a dime for years and suddenly someone handed you a screwdriver, maybe even a power screwdriver. My response was “Oh, that’s how this is supposed to work.” I can do their faces on the low speed, which doesn’t bother them. In fact, I rarely need the high speed, except on their legs. The machine stays much cooler, is much quieter, and works much faster than my previous model. A couple of quick notes on blades: The number 10 that comes with it is NOT for full body. It clips the hair far too short. I use a #5. Also, the comb-style attachments you can buy do not work all that effectively on the course hair of a dog. You need to by the actual blade that is made to cut at that length. Finally, the cutter portion of the blades can be interchanged. You can buy ceramic cutters for far less money than the cost of a new blade and they work fantastically.

Reviews by C. Schmidt
We bought these clippers to trim our long haired German Shepherd Dog. She had a very thick under coat. The clippers worked great. I had no previous training using clippers, so I was a bit nervous about accidentally cutting her. That was never a problem at all. The clippers took a bit of practice to get used to, but once I got the feel of it I was confident. I bought a #7 blade and that’s what we used for her heavy coat. I also bought a can of the Andis Cool Care Plus spray. The blade does get hot while clipping, the spray helped to cool it down so we could continue in one session.
The amazing thing about these clippers is that they seem so solidly built. They are not very noisy at all. Actually, my husband and I laugh because these animal clippers are much better than the “human” ones they use on him when he gets a haircut.
